After receiving a BFA from Pratt Institute and his MFA from Yale University, Barry Nemett was a professor for 50 years at Maryland Institute College of Art and was Chair of MICA’s Painting Department from 1990-2016. He has also taught at Princeton University (2006-2007); Chautauqua Institution; Studio Art Center International (SACI) in Florence, Italy; and International Center for the Arts (ICA) in Montecastello, Italy (summers, 2004–2017). Nemett is Professor Emeritus at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Nemett has lectured throughout the U.S. and abroad, curated numerous gallery and museum shows, and has received painting grants and residencies in the United States, China, Japan, Africa, Italy, Spain, France, Scotland, and Ireland.

He is a frequent contributor to print and online magazines, including Hyperallergic, Brooklyn Rail, Art Critical, Painters on Paintings, Two Coats of Paint, BmoreArt, Baltimore Magazine, and Arts Magazine. He has also written many exhibition catalog essays, authored the college textbook, Images, Objects & Ideas (McGraw-Hill Publishers), and the novel, Crooked Tracks (Barnhardt & Ashe Publishing Co.).
